Waking up early to exercise is for the birds! Waking up early to read . . . now, there's an adventure! Losing weight may take longer than expected :)
I am reading Don DeLillo's Falling Man, and I can see how he is a respected writer. However, I'm not sure I would read another of his books if the writing of the dialogue is similar in other of his books. He leaves gaps. I don't know if this is intentional as if it is to mirror the story of the gaps in life of a person or persons affected by 9/11 or if he thinks that we can pull the pieces together based on the dialogue he presents. What I realized yesterday is that the dialogue is not believable. That's why I'm having a hard time with it. If a little more was added maybe I would know what the characters are talking about, but they seem to be talking in code, or in some poetic hocuspocus and it's just not believable. There was one part where Lianne's mother is talking to Martin, and that' when it hit me. Would someone actually same something like that? I didn't think so.
I started a new book, Eat, Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert for a book club that I plan to attend next Monday. I haven't attended a bookclub outside the ones I organized at work in a few years. I hope I make it, and I hope I finish the book :) So far so good.
Something I've noticed with books written by Nobel Prize Winners translated into English - the translater tries to put as much into one sentence, that it boggles the mind. There is so much to digest because the translater doesn't know how to capture the nuance. It's almost the exact opposite of what is happening in Falling Man as I mentioned above. Too much information with too little substance. So far, and I'm only on page 20, EPL is kindof like that, but with the emotion. It's like a train. However, it's funny, too, and I don't mind that at 6am :) Hopefully, I'll get into the groove of it, and ride the train at the train's speed without too much damage to my emotional well-being. At the same time, EG was in fact describing a lot of stuff happening all at once, so it makes sense that it would feel overwhelming to the reader. Actually, she probably wrote it that way. Get that part out of the way quickly. We'll see.
