Coffee Musings - 061907

I woke up at 5am because it was so hot in my apartment. I looked at the clock to see if the electricity was working, and it was thankfully. However, the temperature in my apartment was 80, and the central air was marked at 76. Usually, it's a little cooler than what I mark it, so I hope my central air isn't broken. I plan on baking a lot tomorrow so if it doesn't recalculate I'm toast. I have the windows open currently, and the central air off because it's 70s outside. It's suppose to get in the 90s again today, so we'll see what my apartment is like when I come home from work.

I like to visit CakeLove every once in a while. I consider them the competition. For the first couple years I've lived here I thought their cakes were too expensive for the taste and the preparation. However, in the past year I've noticed the taste has been taken up a few notches. I haven't tasted many things, maybe something every few months, but I'm starting to see that they have a right to charge the exhorbitant prices they charge. The visual is still just slightly rustic, but the taste is probably better than cakes by bakers formally trained.

That's another thing I hated about pastry school. We really didn't focus on flavor combinations probably because we just had to focus on technique.

Once I finish my Cookie Empress poetry project drafts, then I will switch my focus to more cakes, pies, individual pastries, and breads. Of course I'll still be making cookies because they are easy to eat and share.
