Coffee Musings - 063007

Actually, I'm not drinking coffee, but an iced latte would be good right now. I just ate my last piece of cake from CakeLove. Good thing, too, though, as I ate 3 pieces this week. I didn't have supper those 3 days. It was just like living in Seattle near Simply Desserts. The reason I decided to never eat anything from CakeLove again is the price. Usually, I get a brownie (for breakfast the following morning) with my piece of cake so I don't really pay attention to the price of one piece of cake. Today, I just bought a piece of the Hazelnut hazy cake. $7.00 for a piece of cake that is not room temperature, and that includes a blob of hazelnut macaroon something on top and in the middle so the piece fell apart. Taste is good . . . not $7.00 good though. I could do better than that. In fact, my macaroons that I would sell would in fact look like macaroons, not airy blob things. The ingredients are natural, but that does not mean organic, and that doesn't even mean european style butter. It is a bad sign of the times, when a cafe cake is $7.00/piece. Simply Desserts was less than $4.50, and I'm a fan for life. I guess the rest of the Northwest is also, eh? I also decided that if I want a piece of cake, it's just time to bake my own.

It's very humid today, and I was dreading going home as my air conditioning doesn't work. I decided to buy a cake cookbook from Kramers, and instead I bought the autobiography of Alice Waters, and my first specifically vegan book. Should be fun. I've been buying many books recently considering my nextstopgraduateschool project starts tomorrow. I better read them all or I was just fooling myself, and giving myself a reason to buy books. I never need a reason to buy books :) It's like romano cheese. Without them why live? I'm not going strictly vegan, but I would like to incorporate more vegan recipes in my lifestyle.
